Prime Mates: The Top 10 Monkeys in Pop Culture History

We descended from them, so it only makes sense that, in a fictional sense, monkeys help to tell us who we are.
Like the fossil record, the monkeys who populate popular culture allow us to look back on where we were as a species and hypothesize on where we're headed. Whether it's a black-and-white baboon or an 8-bit ape, they've all contribute to the understanding of us, their human counterparts. With that, I present the top monkeys from throughout pop culture.

Thoughts on Community: 503 "Basic Intergluteal Numismatics"

Last week, Community returned in fine form, with laughs aplenty, recognizable sitcom tropes and a layer of snark both familiar to many modern comedies and unique to this show. Though the ratings were not strong, clearly the hour (particularly "Repilot") was meant to offer a bit of an open door to new fans.
Victim of the Ass Crack Bandit

This week, none of that: a darkly presented episode with few setup-punchline-laughter moments, grim visual style and--to newcomers of the show, anyway--a drastic change in format. It's something that longtime viewers of Community have simply come to expect: some weeks, the show is obviously a sitcom about students in a community college. Some weeks, the show becomes a western, post-apocolyptic zone, stop motion animated musical or alternate universe.

Not that I'm complaining: "Basic Intergluteal Nuismatics" worked, and worked wonderfully.

Thoughts on Community: 501 "Repilot" and 502 "Introduction to Teaching"

After a largely imperfect fourth season and the impossible offseason which saw the return of Dan Harmon, Community returned last night in what was ultimately top form.

Jeff, depressed, with Alan, taunting.
I say "ultimately" because "Repilot," by necessity of season four's conclusion, starts at a rather dark place. Indeed, it almost mimics how Dan Harmon must have felt after his firing from the show: we see Jeff in his failed, strip mall law office as repo men stripped it to the falls--booze included. It's Jeff at a low point, a prelude which sets up his return to Greendale Community College... or is it a reflection to Harmon's low point, which ultimately was a prelude that set up his return to Community?
