'The Walking Dead' into the fall finale

Sunday night marks the final episode of the first half of the fifth season of "The Walking Dead" and, if it's anything like the last four episodes, it'll be relief.

Except it won't be. "The Walking Dead" is known for its mid-season masterpieces. Sophia shuffling out of the barn. Daryl vs. Merle in a desperate brother vs. brother brawl in front of the entire town of Woodbury. The Governor's decapitation of Hershel and Pyrrhic assault on the prison.

While "The Walking Dead" is arguably 2-for-3 in those mid-season cliffhangers -- the Daryl-Merle matchup creating the least dramatic buzz -- it's becoming increasingly difficult for show to top itself AND remain faithful to its source material.

While it is amazing that Nintendo’s Mario Kart series has been around since 1992, it’s not surprising given its winning-if-retread nature: race, battle, repeat. Over the course of two-plus decades, most times we’ve gotten the game we get.

“Mario Kart 8” is the game we deserve. It is easily the best entry in the 22-year-old franchise. Between stunning high-definition vistas, series-upending special items, and next-generation online play additions and refinements, it ups the ante for fun and interactivity on the Wii U.

Agents of SHIELD's Heartbreaking Ward Problem

Haven't seen episode 117? Spoilers ahead.

I'm not much of a crier when it comes to TV. I was misty-eyed when Tasha Yar died on Star Trek: The Next Generation (I was also 7). Tears openly spilled down my cheeks during the excellent finale for LOST. Ditto for the divisive (yet quite good) end to BSG. Probably the most tears have been for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series ender. Jake losing his dad--and the realization that he was never coming back--was a TV slice that cut deep. Other than that... not too many TV tears upon which to report.

The Dynamic (Hydra) Duo

Thus I truly was surprised that the reveal of Agent Ward in Agents of SHIELD's "Turn, Turn, Turn" made the old eyes a little moist. What the show presented was not just a sort of in-house betrayal (ala Melinda May spying on Coulson for Fury--that's a case of watching your boss because your boss'
boss said so); to my mind, Ward shooting Hand (and her helpers) represents a completely corrupted character.

That that's a problem for the series--because there are no good options.

Good question! Here's some evidence via screen caps from the streaming version of the episode on ABC.com. Let's start with the end of the scene, where the redness first appears very high on her neck; a moment later, in the same shot, it descends:

Earlier in the scene...

Thoughts on Community: 503 "Basic Intergluteal Numismatics"

Last week, Community returned in fine form, with laughs aplenty, recognizable sitcom tropes and a layer of snark both familiar to many modern comedies and unique to this show. Though the ratings were not strong, clearly the hour (particularly "Repilot") was meant to offer a bit of an open door to new fans.
Victim of the Ass Crack Bandit

This week, none of that: a darkly presented episode with few setup-punchline-laughter moments, grim visual style and--to newcomers of the show, anyway--a drastic change in format. It's something that longtime viewers of Community have simply come to expect: some weeks, the show is obviously a sitcom about students in a community college. Some weeks, the show becomes a western, post-apocolyptic zone, stop motion animated musical or alternate universe.

Not that I'm complaining: "Basic Intergluteal Nuismatics" worked, and worked wonderfully.

Thoughts on Community: 501 "Repilot" and 502 "Introduction to Teaching"

After a largely imperfect fourth season and the impossible offseason which saw the return of Dan Harmon, Community returned last night in what was ultimately top form.

Jeff, depressed, with Alan, taunting.
I say "ultimately" because "Repilot," by necessity of season four's conclusion, starts at a rather dark place. Indeed, it almost mimics how Dan Harmon must have felt after his firing from the show: we see Jeff in his failed, strip mall law office as repo men stripped it to the falls--booze included. It's Jeff at a low point, a prelude which sets up his return to Greendale Community College... or is it a reflection to Harmon's low point, which ultimately was a prelude that set up his return to Community?
